Rhys Ifans To Play “Spider-Man” Villain

BREAKING: Sony Pictures Entertainment has offered the villain role in the Spider-Man reboot to Rhys Ifans. Studio insiders wouldn’t say which villain he’s playing, and there’s been speculation about a bunch of baddies. He’s the next piece in the puzzle after SPE hired Marc Webb to direct, Andrew Garfield to play the wall crawler and Emma Stone to play his first love Gwen Stacy.

The Goblin had been involved in the Gwen Stacy storyline from the comics, but there have also been rumors that Spidey will battle Venom. Will tell you when I know for sure.

“Never Let Me Go” to screen at Ghent Film Festival

“Never Let Me Go” will be screened at the annual Ghent Film Festival in Belgium. No word yet on when you can see the film or if Andrew will be in attendance, but it runs from October 12-23, 2010.

This year’s Ghent Film Festival will feature a special appearance by French thesp Catherine Deneuve.

Deneuve will travel to Belgium for the Benelux preem of her latest film, “Potiche,” along with co-star Jeremie Renier helmer Francois Ozon.

“Potiche” is one of 23 films making their Benelux bows at the fest including English-language entries “Get Low,” “Never Let Me Go,” “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” “Winter’s Bone,” “Another Year” and “Somewhere.”

The fest kicks off Tuesday with a double-feature of Belgian Hilde Van Mieghem’s “Madly in Love” and Banksy’s doc “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” “Potiche” will unspool Saturday.

The fest will also feature a question-and-answer session with helmer Paul Greengrass, who is being feted with the fest’s Joseph Plateau kudo for career achievement.

The 37th edition of the fest will screen more than 140 films from 35 countries, with organizers expecting approximately 120,000 visitors.

The final day of the fest, Oct. 23, will feature a 10th anniversary celebration of the World Soundtrack Awards, with appearances scheduled from composers Howard Shore, Gustavo Santaollalla, Gabriel Yared and others.

‘Life,’ ‘Secretariat’ debut strong, ‘Soul’ starts soft at No. 5

The Facebook drama “The Social Network” continues to add more friends at the box office as the Sony picture took in another $15.9, according to Rentrak, to top the weekend for a second straight week.

Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel’s romantic comedy “Life as We Know It” debuted with a $14.6-million weekend to take the No. 2 spot.

Coming in third place, Disney’s horse-racing drama “Secretariat” made a comfortable debut with $12.6 million.

“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” added another $7 million to its nest egg to take the fourth spot.

Rounding out the top five with a relatively soft debut and $7 million was Wes Craven’s “My Soul to Take.”

Andrew Garfield: our No 1 hottest young British movie talent

Andrew Garfield: our No 1 hottest young British movie talent
With roles in The Social Network and Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield’s sense of ambition is finally being rewarded

Credits: Won the 2007 Best TV Actor Bafta for Boy A. Film work includes a major role in The Social Network, Never Let Me Go and the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot.

“Until I was about 17, I didn’t quite realise what a major part of my psyche and my soul the American films I was raised on were,” says Andrew Garfield. “Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, The Princess Bride – those are the films that led me to want to be an actor.” Now he has his chance to stake his own claim on the psyches and souls of a new generation of teenage moviegoers, taking the title role in next year’s Spider-Man reboot.

Taking on one of cinema’s most high-profile roles might be a daunting prospect, but his has not quite been a rise from nowhere: 2010 has already been a stellar year for Garfield, whose star has gone supernova with a series of roles that must leave well-established British TV peers like John Simm, David Tennant and Ben Whishaw cursing the scrawny twentysomething.
